上等婚 is a folk classification used in Chinese marriage matching to describe a pairing regarded as highly compatible. It belongs to a three-tier vocabulary alongside 中等婚 and 下等婚. These labels appear frequently in popular discussions of 合婚, but they do not come from a single authoritative standard. Different schools, regional customs, and practitioners may arrive at the grade by different routes, so the same couple can receive different classifications depending on who is doing the assessment and what method is being applied.

The year branch is only one of four pillars in a person’s chart. It is the most visible layer in popular conversation, but it is not the only layer used in serious matching work. Because there is no single adjudication standard, different books, teachers, and software systems produce different grades for the same pair. The label 上等婚 or 下等婚 is therefore not a stable property of the couple. It is the output of a particular selection of rules.

It may be useful as a starting point for discussion or as a way of organizing traditional beliefs, but it should not be used to make life decisions with high stakes.
