Earthly Branch Time: Hours, Zodiac, and Months

The twelve Earthly Branches, or 地支, operate as one integrated symbolic system. One set of twelve characters simultaneously marks the twelve double-hours of the day, the twelve lunar months, and the twelve zodiac animals. In Chinese metaphysics, this is not three separate systems sharing the same names; it is a single framework in which each branch carries temporal, spatial, and qualitative meaning at once. The branches are therefore best understood as a grid laid over time and orientation, in which the same character can indicate a position in the day, a position in the year, a direction, or an animal sign, depending on what is being read.

The twelve branches are assigned in fixed sequence to the twelve months and the twelve time-periods of the day. For the months, 寅 is taken as the first month of the calendrical year, 卯 as the second, and so on in order, ending with 丑 as the twelfth month. For the hours, the sequence begins with 子. The hour of 子 runs from 23:00 to 01:00; 丑 runs from 01:00 to 03:00; and the sequence continues in the same fixed order until 亥, which runs from 21:00 to 23:00. Each branch therefore has one month-position and one time-position, and these positions are stable.

The zodiac animals are mapped onto the same twelve characters. 子 corresponds to the Rat, 丑 to the Ox, 寅 to the Tiger, and so on through the cycle. Because the zodiac is read from the year branch, a person born in a 寅 year is said to be born in the year of the Tiger. The animal is not a separate layer of meaning added to the branch; it is simply one of the standard readings of that branch when it appears as the year pillar.

子既是二十三时到一时，也是鼠

子 is the clearest example of how one branch character carries several fixed readings at once. In the hour system, 子 is the double-hour from 23:00 to 01:00. In the month sequence, 子 is the eleventh month, following 亥 and preceding 丑. In the zodiac sequence, 子 is the Rat. The same character therefore marks a time of day, a month, and an animal sign. These meanings are not interchangeable in practice, but they are all resident in the single character 子 and are invoked according to the context of the reading.

The same holds for every other branch. 寅 is the Tiger, the first month, and the hour from 03:00 to 05:00. 午 is the Horse, the fifth month, and the hour from 11:00 to 13:00. 戌 is the Dog, the ninth month, and the hour from 19:00 to 21:00. In each case the branch is one symbol with multiple fixed positions, not several symbols that happen to share a name.

In a Four Pillars chart, the eight characters are arranged into four pillars: year, month, day, and hour. Each pillar contains one Heavenly Stem and one Earthly Branch. The four branch positions have distinct areas of reference. The year branch is traditionally called the palace of the ancestors, or 祖上宫. The month branch carries the additional function of being the month order, sometimes called the 月令提纲, meaning it sets the seasonal frame for the whole chart. The day branch is the palace of the spouse, or 夫妻宫. The hour branch is the palace of children, or 子女宫.

This means that the same branch character, when it appears in different pillars, does not change its Five Element nature or its hidden stems, but it does change what area of life it points to. For example, 寅 is always yang wood, always belongs to the Wood element, and always contains the hidden stems 甲，丙, and 戊. If 寅 appears in the year branch, it is read in relation to the ancestral line and early environment. If 寅 appears in the day branch, it is read in relation to the spouse and marriage. The underlying qualities of 寅 do not change; the field of application does.

This distinction matters because it prevents a reader from treating a branch as a simple unit of meaning that can be moved from one pillar to another without consequence. The branch is not just a marker of time; it is also a positional marker within the chart. The same character written in a different position is the same in substance but different in reference.

The three uses of the branches — hour, month, and zodiac — are fixed in their own sequences, but they cannot be freely substituted for one another in analysis. The zodiac is read from the year branch alone. A Four Pillars chart contains eight characters, and only one of them is the year branch. Two people may share the same zodiac animal because they share the same year branch, but their charts are not the same. The other seven characters differ, and even within the same year branch, the month, day, and hour positions vary from person to person. The zodiac is therefore a single-character reading and cannot stand for the chart as a whole.

A second boundary concerns the calendar. The zodiac year and the year branch follow different dividing lines. The zodiac is conventionally taken to change at the Spring Festival, or Chinese New Year. The year branch in Four Pillars reckoning changes at the solar term 立春, the beginning of spring. These two dates are not the same. The Spring Festival is a lunar new year date and falls on a different day each year, while 立春 is a solar-term date, usually falling on February 3, 4, or 5. For a person born after 立春 but before the Spring Festival, the two systems give different results. In Four Pillars practice, the year branch is determined by 立春, while the popular zodiac is determined by the Spring Festival. For births in this interval, the zodiac animal and the year branch animal will not match.

The hour and month readings likewise cannot be substituted. A branch that marks a month cannot be read as if it marked an hour, and a branch that marks an hour cannot be read as if it marked a month, even though the character is the same. The sequences are parallel but distinct, and each branch occupies a different position in each sequence. For example, 寅 is the first month, but it is the third double-hour of the day. The meaning of 寅 as the beginning of the seasonal cycle does not transfer to the hour from 03:00 to 05:00 without adjustment. The hour reading of 寅 is governed by its position in the daily cycle, just as the month reading is governed by its position in the yearly cycle.

The system works because the branches are consistent in themselves. Each branch has a fixed place in each sequence, a fixed element, fixed hidden stems, and a fixed animal. The art of reading lies in knowing which sequence is being consulted and which pillar position is being examined. The same character may appear in many places, but it is never read in exactly the same way in all of them.
