午卯破
wǔ mǎo pò · Wu-Mao Destruction
午卯破 is one of the six destructions, or 六破, in Chinese terrestrial-branch analysis, denoting a concealed impairing relation between the branches 午 and 卯 when both appear among the four pillars of a natal chart.

The relation 午卯破 belongs to the set known as 六破. The six pairs are 子酉,寅亥,辰丑,午卯,申巳, and 戌未. The method of identification looks only at the four earthly branches present in the four pillars: year, month, day, and hour. If any one of these six pairs appears among those four branches, the destruction relation is deemed to exist. It does not matter whether the two branches fall in the year and month pillars, month and day pillars, day and hour pillars, year and day pillars, or any other combination. The presence of both branches anywhere in the four pillars is sufficient.
In the case of 午卯破, the two branches are 午 and 卯. This pair is classified as a destruction between two cardinal branches, or 四正. 午 is the cardinal fire branch and occupies its flourishing position as the representative of due south. 卯 is the cardinal wood branch and occupies its flourishing position as the representative of due east. Because both branches are 四正, each stands in its own strong or prosperous place, and their interaction is therefore treated as a clash of two upright, established positions rather than as an incidental contact between lesser branches.
为何难考
Wood and fire are ordinarily in a generating relationship, since wood feeds fire. For this reason, 午卯破 belongs to the same category as 子酉破: a destruction formed between two branches that otherwise stand in a mutual production cycle. The relation is not one of outward attack, but of hidden impairment within a nominally supportive pairing.
Between 卯 and 午 there is no 冲, no 刑, no 合, and no 害. In the standard catalogues of branch relations, none of those four major categories applies to 卯 and 午. The destruction relation is the only recognised branch relation between them. This makes the pairing somewhat unusual: two branches that would seem to support each other, with no overt conflict, are nevertheless counted as a destruction pair.
The weight of the six destructions is generally placed below that of 冲,刑,合, and 害. Destructions are usually interpreted as concealed hindrance, mutual displeasure, or quiet undermining. Their effect tends to be subtle rather than dramatic. In practical chart reading, 破 is normally treated as supplementary information. It is seldom used alone as the main basis for judgement, and its presence usually qualifies or colours other more prominent relations rather than overriding them.
The six destructions are not given a dedicated chapter in classical sources. The 子平真诠 discusses earthly-branch relations under the framework of 刑,冲,会, and 合, and does not incorporate 破 into that scheme. Accordingly, this entry does not cite any chapter or section from that text. The method of checking 破 has been transmitted mainly through mnemonic verses and folk practice rather than through a formal classical exposition.
位置与轻重
The lists of six destruction pairings are not entirely uniform across different schools. Some traditions record different pairings or omit certain pairs. The six pairs given on this site are derived by the engine according to a fixed rule. They are not expanded beyond that rule, and pairings from other schools are not mixed into this system. The entry therefore treats 午卯破 strictly as one of the six fixed pairs used by this knowledge base, without adding alternative pairings or importing variant lists.
Position affects the prominence of the destruction relation. When the two branches stand adjacent to one another in the pillar sequence, the impairing effect is more apparent. For example, if 卯 appears in the month branch and 午 appears in the day branch, the two are contiguous, and the destruction is regarded as more readily observable. When the two branches are separated by one or more positions, the effect weakens by degrees. A 卯 in the year branch and a 午 in the day branch would be considered less immediate than an adjacent pairing, though the relation still formally exists.
The relation also depends on the actual presence of both branches. If the natal chart contains only one of the two branches, the destruction does not yet take shape. The other branch must be brought in by a luck pillar or an annual pillar. Only when the missing branch arrives through 大运 or 流年 does the destruction relation become active for that period. In such cases the effect is temporary, tied to the duration of the incoming branch, and is read as a passing influence rather than a permanent structural feature of the chart.

The following engine-computed chart is used as an example. The four pillars are 壬寅,癸卯,庚午, and 丁丑. The pattern is 正财格. The 午卯破 relation falls on the month and day pillars.

常见误区
A common misunderstanding is to treat 午卯破 as a form of 冲 or 刑. It is neither. 午 and 卯 do not oppose each other across the branch circle, nor do they fall under the standard 刑 pairings. Another error is to assume that because wood generates fire, 午 and 卯 must be entirely harmonious. The destruction model holds that even a generating pair can carry hidden friction, and 午卯破 is specifically classed as a destruction between two branches that are otherwise in a productive relationship.
Some readers expect 破 to have the same force as 冲. That overstates its usual role. In most readings, 破 is a secondary indicator. It suggests background strain, quiet resentment, or a subtle spoiling effect, but it does not carry the direct collision energy of 冲 or the binding entanglement of 合. When 午卯破 is present, it is generally used to refine an interpretation rather than to define the chart on its own.
There is also a tendency to apply the destruction relation across only the month and day pillars. The method of 六破 does not restrict the relation by pillar position. Any two pillars may contain the pair. The example chart happens to place 卯 in the month and 午 in the day, but the rule itself allows the pair to appear in any two of the four pillars and still count as 午卯破.
Finally, because different schools occasionally list different destruction pairs, some charts may appear to contain a 破 under one system but not under another. This knowledge base uses one fixed set of six pairs. It does not merge variant lists or treat additional pairings as valid within its own framework. For 午卯破, the only relevant condition is that both 午 and 卯 appear among the four branches, regardless of pillar position, and that the relation be read as a concealed, secondary impairment.
