BaZi Boundary: Year Pillar Starts at Li Chun

The eight-character system is built on four time pillars: year, month, day, and hour. Each pillar has its own boundary line, and these boundaries do not coincide with the common calendar. The term 八字分界点 refers to the points at which one pillar changes to the next. A person born near such a point may have one pillar reassigned even though the other three remain unchanged. The four boundaries function independently, and each must be checked separately against the birth time.

四柱各用一条界线

The four pillars are not divided by a single line such as midnight or New Year. Instead, the year pillar changes at the beginning of spring, the month pillar changes at the twelve solar nodes called 节, the day pillar changes at twenty-three hours, and the hour pillar changes every two hours. These four lines do not affect one another. A change at the year boundary does not alter the month, day, or hour pillar. A change at the month boundary does not alter the year, day, or hour pillar. The same principle applies to the day and hour boundaries. When a birth falls exactly on one of these lines, normally only one pillar needs to be re-examined. This is the practical meaning of the four boundaries being independent.

年柱的界线是立春

The year pillar is bounded by the arrival of 立春, the beginning of spring. A person born before the exact moment of 立春 still belongs to the previous year pillar, even if the birth occurs after January 1 of the new Gregorian year or after the first day of the first lunar month. The year pillar does not change at New Year’s Day, and it does not change at the lunar New Year. For example, a birth in late January or early February may fall after the lunar New Year but before 立春; in that case, the year pillar remains that of the previous year. The common calendar year and the lunar year are therefore not the standard for the year pillar. Only the 立春 moment determines the year pillar boundary. Because 立春 usually falls around February 4, there is a gap between the lunar New Year and the year-pillar change in many years.

月柱只在节上换,不在气上换

The month pillar changes only at the twelve 节 nodes, not at the twelve 气 nodes. The twelve 节 are 立春,惊蛰,清明,立夏,芒种,小暑,立秋,白露,寒露,立冬,大雪, and 小寒. These 节 nodes are the only points at which the month pillar advances from one month branch to the next. The intervening nodes such as 雨水,春分,谷雨,小满,夏至,大暑,处暑,秋分,霜降,小雪,冬至, and 大寒 are 气 nodes and do not participate in changing the month pillar. A birth after 雨水 but before 惊蛰, for instance, still belongs to the same month pillar that began at 立春. The month pillar is not tied to the first day of a Gregorian month, nor to the first day of a lunar month. Only the 节 point determines the change.

日柱的界线在二十三时

The day pillar is bounded at twenty-three hours, not at midnight. This site follows the convention of treating the late 子 hour as the beginning of the next day. A person born at or after twenty-three hours has the day pillar advanced to the following day. Thus a birth at 23:15 on a given calendar date is assigned the day pillar of the next day, even though the ordinary date has not yet changed. A birth at 22:50 remains on the same day pillar. The twenty-three-hour line is therefore the dividing point for the day pillar, and it is applied consistently in this system. The day pillar does not wait for zero hour. The late 子 convention means that the segment from twenty-three hours to midnight is treated as the first part of the next day pillar.

时柱两小时一支

The hour pillar is divided into twelve two-hour segments, each corresponding to one earthly branch. The segment from twenty-three hours to one hour is 子时. The remaining segments proceed in order: one to three hours is 丑时, three to five is 寅时, five to seven is 卯时, seven to nine is 辰时, nine to eleven is 巳时, eleven to thirteen is 午时, thirteen to fifteen is 未时, fifteen to seventeen is 申时, seventeen to nineteen is 酉时, nineteen to twenty-one is 戌时, and twenty-one to twenty-three is 亥时. The hour pillar branch is fixed by this two-hour schedule. The hour pillar also changes at twenty-three hours because that is the start of 子时. Therefore the twenty-three-hour line affects both the day pillar and the hour pillar simultaneously.

四条线互不牵动

The four boundary lines are independent of one another. 立春 changes only the year pillar. A 节 changes only the month pillar. Twenty-three hours changes only the day pillar and the hour pillar. This means that when a birth occurs on a boundary day, normally only one pillar needs to be re-evaluated. If the birth is near 立春, the year pillar may need checking, but the month, day, and hour pillars are unaffected by that particular line. If the birth is near a 节, the month pillar may need checking, but the year pillar is unaffected unless the birth is also near 立春. If the birth is near twenty-three hours, the day pillar and hour pillar may need checking, but the year and month pillars are unaffected unless the birth is also near their respective boundaries. The principle of non-interference is a structural feature of the four-pillar system, not a secondary rule.

Two additional points follow from these boundaries. First, the zodiac animal is based on the lunar New Year, while the year pillar is based on 立春. The two are generally about half a month apart. A person born after 立春 but before the lunar New Year has a year pillar that has already entered the new year, while the zodiac animal by the popular lunar standard still belongs to the previous year. In that interval, the two conclusions do not match. This is a common source of confusion when comparing zodiac statements with eight-character year pillars. The eight-character system does not use the lunar New Year as the year boundary.

Second, the heavenly stem of the month pillar is derived from the year stem through the 五虎遁 method, and the heavenly stem of the hour pillar is derived from the day stem through the 五鼠遁 method. Because of this dependency, an error in the year pillar will also cause an error in the month pillar. If the year pillar is assigned to the wrong year, the month stem calculated from the year stem will be wrong as well. Likewise, an error in the day pillar will also cause an error in the hour pillar. If the day pillar is assigned to the wrong day, the hour stem calculated from the day stem will be wrong as well. This is why the boundary points must be checked carefully before the stems are derived. A boundary error in the year or day pillar is not isolated; it propagates into the dependent pillar.
