Yuan Tiangang's Bone-Weight Song: the simplest door, and its blind spot

Bone-weight reckoning is traditionally attributed to the Tang-dynasty astrologer Yuan Tiangang (袁天罡). It uses no Five-Element generation and control, no Ten Spirits, no pattern (格局) analysis. It simply converts your lunar birth year, month, day, and hour into "bone weights" measured in qian (钱) and liang (两), sums the four, and matches the total against a few rhymed verdicts in the Bone-Weight Song (《称骨歌》). It spread widely in Ming and Qing folk manuscripts precisely because it requires nothing — you don't even need to read the sexagenary stems and branches; anyone can add up a table. It is the most simplified destiny tool the tradition produced.

But that is exactly why it compresses analytical resolution to almost nothing. A person's Four Pillars generate at least hundreds of thousands of distinct combinations, while bone-weight totals span only a few dozen brackets. It is like reading only a single overall score and never the subject-by-subject marks. Genuine destiny analysis, by contrast, works like a differential diagnosis: it unpacks Day Master strength, the success or failure of the pattern, and the turning of the luck cycles.

A Ba Zi view: one scale, two lives

In Zi Ping practice, what really governs a person's trajectory is whether the pattern is "with feeling" (有情) or not, and whether the favorable god (用神) is well-supported. The Zi Ping Zhen Quan, in its chapter "On the Favorable God" (《子平真诠·论用神》), stresses that a chart forms its pattern when the favorable god is generated and supported while the unfavorable god is restrained, and breaks it when the favorable god is controlled and the unfavorable god runs free.
