Hidden Stems Mislabeling: Fixed Correspondence of Earthly Branches

Deep Oracle Practitioner Desk · 2026-09-19 · 8 min read

In Chinese-metaphysics practice, 藏干标错 refers to errors in the hidden-stem assignments under the earthly branches. The hidden stems are not variable with a person’s birth date, birthplace, or chart style; they belong to a fixed structural correspondence between the twelve branches and the ten stems. When a chart is laid out, the four branches are normally visible, but their internal stems are not shown on the same level as the eight characters. A mistake in this layer therefore does not alter the eight characters themselves, but it can silently change the ten-god labels and some relational judgments derived from the branches.

藏干是固定对应,不应该有分歧

The hidden stems under the earthly branches are a fixed correspondence and should not vary from one chart to another. For example, 子 contains 癸;丑 contains 己,癸, and 辛;寅 contains 甲,丙, and 戊;卯 contains 乙; and so on through the twelve branches. This is not an interpretive choice made according to the day master, the season, or the school of practice. It is a structural table. Because the table is fixed, any disagreement about what a branch contains is, in this framework, an error rather than a legitimate alternative.

The same point applies to the order in which the hidden stems are listed. The table does not merely say which stems appear under a branch; it also fixes their layering. If a branch is said to contain two stems when the standard table gives three, or if a stem is inserted in the wrong position, the chart is considered mislabeled even if the visible four pillars remain unchanged.

四生四旺四库的藏干结构

The twelve branches are divided into three structural groups according to their hidden-stem depth. The four peak branches, 子午卯酉, contain one or two stems each. These are the branches at the strongest point of their element, and their internal structure is comparatively simple. The four birth branches, 寅申巳亥, contain three stems each. These branches mark the beginning of seasonal movement, so their internal structure includes the incoming, dominant, and residual influences. The four storage branches, 辰戌丑未, also contain three stems each. These are the earth branches associated with storage and transition, and their hidden stems reflect the elements being held, transformed, or released.

This grouping means that the number of hidden stems is not arbitrary. If a chart displays only two stems under 寅, or only one under 辰, the display does not match the fixed structure. The same applies if a birth branch is treated as containing only its dominant stem. The structural table must be applied uniformly to all four branches in the chart.

本气、中气、余气的次序

Within a branch that contains more than one stem, the hidden stems are ranked in order of weight. The principal qi, 本气, is the strongest. The middle qi, 中气, comes next. The residual qi, 余气, is the weakest. This ranking affects the relative influence assigned to each hidden stem, but it does not affect whether the stem exists under that branch. A stem that is listed as residual is still present; it is not omitted merely because its weight is lower.

For example, where a branch contains three stems, all three are part of the branch’s fixed content. The first is the principal stem, the second the middle stem, and the third the residual stem. If a chart lists the correct three stems but reverses the order, that is also a labeling error because the order carries meaning for weighting and for subsequent ten-god derivation. The distinction between weight and existence is important: a residual stem is not a decorative element, and a middle stem is not interchangeable with the principal stem.

藏干错了会连带十神错

The hidden stems are the basis for assigning the ten gods to the earthly branches. A branch does not have a direct ten-god label by itself; its ten-god label is derived from the relationship between each hidden stem and the day master. If a hidden stem is wrong, omitted, or placed out of order, the ten-god annotation for that branch can also be wrong.

This means the error is not confined to the hidden-stem layer. For example, if a branch is said to contain a stem that should not be there, then a ten-god relation may be generated from a stem that has no structural basis under that branch. If a stem is missing, a whole relation may disappear from the annotation. If the order is wrong, the weighting may be misread, and the dominant ten-god association of the branch may shift. In practice, this is why 藏干标错 is treated as a serious issue even though the four pillars look correct on the surface.

The ten-god error can then propagate further into interpretations that depend on the branches, such as assessments of the spouse palace, the parents palace, the children palace, or the career palace. The visible eight characters remain the same, but the derived labels attached to those characters can be incorrect.

这一层的错误在页面上看不出来

One practical difficulty is that an error in the hidden stems is not visible from the four pillars alone. The eight characters shown for the year, month, day, and hour are still correct because the hidden stems are not part of the eight-character string. A chart could therefore display the correct 年柱,月柱,日柱, and 时柱 while still carrying a hidden-stem error underneath.

This is why a visual check of the eight characters is insufficient. The reader must look at the annotation layer below the branches. If the page does not show the hidden stems at all, the error may be impossible to detect from that page alone. If the page shows the hidden stems but the reader does not compare them against the fixed table, the mistake can pass unnoticed. The four pillars being correct does not guarantee that the branch annotations are correct.

逐个核对的方法

The method for checking this layer is to compare the hidden stems one by one against the fixed table. The table does not change with the chart, so the same reference can be used for every reading. For each of the four branches in the chart, take the hidden stems shown and compare them with the standard list for that branch. Check both the set of stems and their order.

This is a mechanical process. It does not require judging the chart’s balance, the strength of the day master, or the interactions among the stems. It only requires confirming that each branch’s hidden stems match the fixed table exactly. If a branch has the wrong number of stems, the wrong stem, or the right stems in the wrong order, the chart contains a labeling error at this layer.

The check should be applied to all four branches, not only to the day branch or the month branch. An error under any branch can affect the ten-god annotations for that branch and therefore the reading of the corresponding palace or relationship.

本站引擎的固定标注方式

This site’s engine marks the hidden stems according to the fixed table, branch by branch. It does not adjust the hidden stems based on the day master or on seasonal strength. The same input will always produce the same hidden-stem assignment and the same ten-god output for the branches, because the underlying table is constant.

The engine then derives the branch ten gods from the relationship between each hidden stem and the day master. This means the ten-god labels shown under the branches are a direct consequence of the fixed hidden-stem table. If the hidden stems are correct, the ten-god labels follow mechanically. If the hidden stems are wrong, the ten-god labels will be wrong as well.

Because the process is deterministic, consistency is built into the engine. The same eight characters entered twice will produce the same result, including the hidden stems and the branch ten gods. This does not guarantee that every interpretive conclusion is correct, but it does mean the labeling layer is reproducible and checkable against the fixed table.

藏干只影响十神与部分关系判断

A final point of scope: 藏干 affects the ten-god labels and some relational judgments, but it does not change the four pillars themselves. The eight characters are the same whether the hidden stems are labeled correctly or incorrectly. The hidden-stem layer is an additional structural layer beneath the visible pillars.

Its influence is therefore limited to what is derived from the branches: the ten-god annotations for the branches, the weighting of the hidden stems, and interpretations that depend on those relations. It does not alter the year, month, day, or hour pillar. It does not change the day master. It does not rewrite the stem and branch combinations shown in the eight-character string. For this reason, a hidden-stem error can coexist with a completely correct four-pillar display, and the correction of the error leaves the eight characters unchanged while changing some of the derived labels and judgments attached to the branches.
