What Information Is Needed for AI BaZi Calculation

A complete bazi chart requires four categories of input: the Gregorian birth date, the clock time and minute of birth, the sex of the person, and a clear statement of which calendar system is being used for the date. Without these four, some part of the chart or its derived components cannot be reliably produced. Other details commonly imagined to be necessary are either optional or entirely irrelevant to the calculation method used by this engine.

The four necessary items are the Gregorian year, month, and day of birth; the hour and minute of birth expressed in clock time; the sex of the person; and an explicit note on the calendar system of the supplied date.

The Gregorian birth date is the anchor for converting to the sexagenary year, month, and day pillars. The birth time as a clock reading is required for fixing the hour pillar. The minute matters because the boundary between two hour branches falls on the hour; a birth recorded at 10:59 and one at 11:01 can belong to different hour branches. Sex is not used in erecting the four pillars themselves, but it is required for determining the direction of the ten-year luck cycle. The calendar note tells the engine whether the supplied date is already in the Gregorian calendar or must first be converted from the lunar calendar.

When these four items are recorded in a fixed order and format, the same block of information can be reused directly across different bazi tools. There is no need to retype the birth data each time a different program is used.

Three pieces of information often requested elsewhere are not needed here: the person’s name, city of birth, and occupation. The input fields for this engine do not include name, birth city, or occupation, and none of these three enters into any calculation. They do not affect the four pillars, the ten gods, the earthly branch relations, or the luck cycle. A chart can be fully derived without them.

Two further items are of no use even if supplied: the longitude and latitude of the birthplace, and any identity document number. This engine does not perform true solar time correction, and the input form has no longitude field. Because no correction for local solar time is applied, coordinates cannot alter the hour pillar or any other computed result. An identity document number is purely administrative information and has no place in the calculation.

The calendar system underlying the supplied date must be stated before anything else is done. If the date in hand is a lunar date, it must be converted to the Gregorian calendar before the pillars are derived. If the date is already Gregorian, no conversion is needed. Getting this wrong shifts the year pillar or the month pillar as a whole.

The distinction matters because a lunar date and a Gregorian date that look similar can fall in different solar terms or even different sexagenary years. A date given as the tenth day of the first lunar month is not the same as January 10 in the Gregorian calendar. Without the calendar note, the person preparing the chart cannot know whether to convert first or to proceed directly. The safest practice is to write the calendar label next to the date, such as Gregorian or lunar, rather than leaving it to inference.

If the birth time is missing, the hour pillar cannot be fixed. The loss is not confined to the hour pillar itself. The ten gods associated with the hour stem and the hour branch also cannot be determined, and some symbolic star assessments that depend on the hour branch become unavailable. The year, month, and day pillars can still be erected, but the chart is incomplete at the hour position.

If the sex is missing, the direction of the ten-year luck cycle cannot be judged. For a male chart the cycle normally moves forward or backward according to the year stem’s yin or yang, and for a female chart the direction is reversed by the same rule. Without sex, that rule cannot be applied. However, the original four pillars, the ten gods, and the earthly branch relationships are unaffected. The missing piece is confined to the luck cycle column.

If the calendar note is missing, the entire year pillar and month pillar may be shifted. A lunar date mistakenly treated as Gregorian can place the chart in the wrong sexagenary year and the wrong month pillar, and the solar term boundaries used for the month stem and branch will no longer match the actual birth moment. The error is not partial but structural, because the year and month anchors move together.

If the year, month, or day is missing, the corresponding pillar cannot be derived at all. The chart then lacks one of its four core columns, and any analysis built on that column is also missing. The requirement is therefore not a formality: each of the four necessary items supports a separate part of the final table.
