BaZi Date Selection (择日) — How Practitioners Choose Auspicious Dates for Weddings, Openings, Moves

Why date selection isn't flipping a wall calendar

Most people first encounter date selection when they see a wall calendar entry like "May 9, 2026 — Yellow-Dao Auspicious Day — Suitable: Marriage, Travel, Business Opening." That kind of universal-calendar date selection is public, uniform, and does not vary by person — but real date selection doesn't work that way.

The real proposition of date selection is: for a specific person, doing a specific thing, find a specific time that harmonizes with their BaZi chart. The same civil date can be auspicious for a Jia-wood day master and inauspicious for a Geng-metal day master; a good day for a couple whose spouse palace is Mao might be a clash day for a couple whose spouse palace is You.

The wall calendar's "yellow-dao auspicious day" answers "which day's celestial energy is more harmonized." Personal date selection answers "which day is best for me to do this specific thing." The latter requires first having the person's BaZi chart, then layering on the event-type rules — that's the date-selector's craft.

The three-layer judgment (in decreasing priority)

Layer 1: Eliminate hard taboo days

This layer is the "cannot do" hard constraint. Before any selection, eliminate:

  • Day clashing the day pillar: day pillar's earthly branch is clashed (if day pillar is Chen, Xu day is the clash day).
  • Day clashing the month pillar: month pillar's branch is clashed.
  • Three-punishment day: day branch combines with the chart's branches into a three-punishment combo (Yin-Si-Shen, Chou-Xu-Wei, Zi-Mao mutual punishment, Chen/Wu/You/Hai self-punishment).
  • The native's own-zodiac day in their own-zodiac year (本命日): traditionally believed to invite spirit interference for major undertakings.
  • Year-breaker (岁破) day: branch clashing the annual stem-branch (2026 is Bing-Wu, so Zi day is the year-breaker).

This layer is subtraction — first eliminate everything you can't do, then enter the positive selection.

Layer 2: Choose useful-god-empowered days

If the native's useful god is Metal (see the four useful-god selection schools), among the remaining days prioritize days when Metal qi is dominant: Shen days, You days, Shen month, You month, Geng days, Xin days. If the useful god is Wood, prefer Yin/Mao/Jia/Yi days.

This layer is addition — among the days that aren't ruled out, select the one most supportive of the native.

Layer 3: Match the event's own requirements

Different events have their own date-selection needs — this layer is the event-type-specific rules.

Four scenario rule sets

Wedding date

Wedding date is the most complex — both partners' charts must be considered, not one side alone.

Process:

  1. Eliminate each partner's individual taboo days (Layer 1 rules above).
  2. Prioritize days where both useful gods are simultaneously empowered — both useful gods are Metal → choose Metal day; if useful gods conflict (one Wood, one Metal) → take a "bridging" element (Water) day instead.
  3. Avoid peach-blossom days: weddings traditionally not held on peach-blossom days (chart with Yin/Wu/Xu sees Mao as peach blossom; Si/You/Chou sees Wu; Shen/Zi/Chen sees You; Hai/Mao/Wei sees Zi).
  4. Avoid days clashing the spouse palace: day-branch clashing spouse-palace branch is a no.
  5. The groom should avoid the bride's month-pillar clash day, and vice versa — for the family-relationship layer.

In practice, common good wedding date combinations are: both useful gods aligned + three-combination or six-combination with the native's day branch + the month not clashing the native's month pillar. See BaZi compatibility analysis for the partner-matching layer.

Business opening / launch

The central axis of business-opening date selection is "wealth qi entering" — find a day where wealth stars are empowered and the useful god has force.

Process:

  1. Eliminate the founder's hard taboo days.
  2. Choose days when wealth stars are dominant: Jia/Yi-wood day master's wealth stars are Earth → Chen/Xu/Chou/Wei days; Bing/Ding-fire day master's wealth stars are Metal → Shen/You days.
  3. Coordinate with the useful god: if wealth star IS the useful god, double benefit; if wealth star is a taboo (native has wealth excess with weak day master), avoid days when wealth is overly strong.
  4. Hour selection: opening ceremony hour falls in the "noble star hour" — the hour corresponding to the day master's Heavenly-Lucky Noble (天乙贵人).
  5. Avoid breaking-day, dangerous-day, closing-day: traditional yellow-calendar taboos — major occasions usually observe these.

Ground-breaking / renovation

The core constraint for ground-breaking is cannot clash the seated mountain — the building's orientation determines the seated-mountain direction; the ground-breaking day-branch cannot clash that direction's branch. Example: a house seated north facing south (seated Zi facing Wu) — Wu day for ground-breaking violates the seated mountain.

Process:

  1. Determine the building's seated mountain.
  2. Avoid seated-mountain-clash day + native's hard taboo days + the year's three-killings days (2026 Bing-Wu year's three-killings are in the Chou/Yin/Mao directions).
  3. Choose days when Heavenly Virtue (天德) or Monthly Virtue (月德) is on duty — traditional major-construction date authority.
  4. Avoid the Earth King On Duty (土王用事) periods — the 18 days at the end of each season when earth qi is overwhelmingly strong, ground-breaking risks disturbing earth spirits.

Moving / housewarming

Moving date rules are relatively relaxed, but still have hard constraints:

  1. Avoid native's hard taboo days + year's three-killings days.
  2. Choose Travel Horse (驿马) day or Heavenly Virtue (天德) day — Travel Horse rules movement; Heavenly Virtue rules harmony.
  3. Avoid the month-breaker day — month-breaker (month branch clashing day branch) day is traditionally inauspicious for moving.
  4. Housewarming hour selection outweighs the day itself — once the day is chosen, pick the hour from the native's useful-god-empowered window.

The boundary: when date selection isn't necessary

Not everything needs formal date selection. Daily commute, casual shopping, ordinary meetings, etc. — go by the wall calendar or pure convenience. Scenarios that genuinely warrant proper date selection:

  • Marriage registration / wedding banquet
  • Company registration / major contracts
  • Property purchase / housewarming
  • Major renovation / ground-breaking
  • Long-term partnership formation

If an event's impact horizon is months-to-years, date selection has meaningful return. If the horizon is hours-to-days, the marginal benefit is small.
